After my book talk in Visby on Monday, I was approached by a bespectacled older gentleman with a look in his eye I have, by now, learnt to recognise. The look of someone about to confide a long-held secret.
He told me he had been a radio operator on the island of Gotland in the very organisation examined in The Stay Behinds: Sweden’s Cold War Guardians, sharing details that I have not yet made public. Yesterday, I visited him at his home.
In an hour-long interview this man filled in some remaining gaps in my understanding of Sweden’s stay-behind movement, though readers will have to wait for the revised and expanded version to learn about them. What I can mention here, however, is that he took me on a tour by car of local sites connected to his clandestine work.
